Hotel Heritage

400 years of history and stories

For more than four hundred years, the old walls of the Hotel Heritage have kept secret inspiring stories, written over time by their mysterious owners.

We create unforgettable ties.

If you listen to them, they reveal eras of patriotic Protestants, mighty rulers, dreamy poets and painters as well as passionate lovers.

Forming the foundations of the Slovene written language and the Hotel Heritage

Fabijan Kirchberger was the prime seller of Protestant books in Ljubljana and the first known owner of the building in which you are located. He devoted many years to the translation of the Holy Bible into Croatian language, co-written by Primož Trubar among others, who wrote the first Slovene book in the year 1550, thus setting one of the greatest milestones in the history of the Slovenian language.

Forbidden love

Janez Adam Kirchberger took over the house after his father's death and soon became entangled in a love triangle with his sister-in-law Ursula Gaionzell, who was engaged to a noble gentleman named Wizenstein. Adam and Ursula fell in love, eloped and were secretly married in Italy. The Clergy and an angry Wizenstein caught up with them the following year and annulled their marriage. After a long struggle with the diocese of Ljubljana, they managed to renew their marriage. They returned to Ljubljana where they lived happily ever after with their two beautiful daughters.

Poet and friend of the greatest Slovenian poet

In the 19th century, the house where the Hotel Heritage stands today was owned by the influential and noble family of Auersperg. Count Anton Alexander von Auersperg was an important poet, politician and liberal freeman of the time, and a great friend and student of our greatest poet Dr France Prešeren. He married Countess Maria Attems, a painter of floral still-life. A replica of one of her still-life paintings adorns the wall of our hotel.

A nucleus of art in one of the most beautiful parts of old Ljubljana

In the 1980s, the oldest sales gallery in Slovenia – the Ars Gallery's display window was located right where the Lounge of the Hotel Heritage stands today. During the four decades of its operation, close to 500 exhibitions of many well-established painters were hosted. Throughout, the gallery also had a keen ear for young, yet-to-be-established artists; Our doors also remain wide open to young artists, who may exhibit their artwork here.
